Airport '77

1 9 7 7 (USA)

This is the second sequel to Airport and stars Jack Lemmon as the pilot. This time, the co-pilot of a private 747 Jumbo Jet (outfitted like a Holiday Inn) turns out to be a terrorist planning to steal some valuable artwork on board. The paintings - and the plane - belong to Jimmy Stewart.

The skyjacking attempt fails but the plane crashes into the sea in the Bermuda triangle and sinks to the bottom of the ocean. Fortuitously, it sinks in only 30 feet of water!

George Kennedy appears in a small role, helping to get the US Navy rescue operation underway, and the second half of the film takes place underwater.

By this time, the Airport theme was thoroughly exhausted, although a further sequel - The Concorde - was made in 1979.

Darren McGavin, Gil Gerard and Olivia de Havilland co-star as passengers, along with Tom Sullivan who plays a blind pianist (seriously!).
