Pulling on a tradition of cheap laughs stemming from the success of films like Airplane (Flying High) and Top Secret, The Naked Gun was a massive success, despite hanging its hopes on washed-up stars such as Leslie Nielsen (in this case as Frank Drebin), Priscilla Presley and Ricardo Montalban.

As it turned out, former straight leading man Nielsen was just made for slapstick (his trademark confused head cocking is actually a result of being almost completely deaf).
