A teenage girl worries that her lower-class roots might affect her budding relationship with a wealthy classmate.

Screenwriter John Hughes, whose specialty is teens in turmoil, scores with this latter-day Cinderella story played out with intelligence and caring. Molly Ringwald invests a sense of reality to her role as Andie, the sweet, poor, high school senior who endures hostility from her wealthier classmates. Yet she eventually attracts a  charming and well-off boy, Blane (Andrew McCarthy). 

As a nerdy twerp who dresses like a cross between a Harlem pimp and Jughead from The Archies, Jon Cryer is funny, outrageous, obnoxious and completely disarming.
