Albert Finney rose to stardom in this stark rendition of working-class lifestyles in an English industrial community. Adapted by Alan Sillitoe from his own novel, the film focuses on Finney as an impish, devious non-conformist who's unhappy as a Nottingham factory worker. He also has an affair with a married woman, until he eventually settles for a more conventional existence. 

Roberts, as the married woman, and Field, as Finney's girl friend, give solid supporting efforts in this finely crafted drama.
