The Way We Were (1973)
This
classy soap opera set in the McCarthy era was fortunate to have
inspired casting with Redford and Streisand as mismatched lovers
whose ideological differences pull them apart.
Katie Morosky (Streisand) is a plain left-wing campus radical
during the 1930s. Hubbell Gardiner (Redford) is a handsome
apolitical WASP athlete who is also a writer.
Improbably they fall in love and marry, but he sells out his
writing talents to Hollywood and she is willing to sacrifice
everything - including her husband - for her political
convictions.
Streisand captures her liberal, pre-feminist character
perfectly.
