Boston mainman Tom Scholz got a masters degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology before applying his brain-power to feel-good soft rock. 1976's Boston still holds the record for biggest-selling debut album.

Scholz has a sideline inventing hi-tech music kit - profits from his popular Rockman guitar amp have only added to his wealth.

In 1986, Boston broke an eight-year hibernation by selling a phenomenal 3 million copies of their Third Stage LP in its first month of release.
