in rural Tennessee, Dolly Parton's vocal talents were evident
early on - at 12 she was a regular on local television. But she
didn't hit the big time until 1974 with her self-penned
showstopper, Jolene.
Sung with understated passion, the song transformed popular
perceptions of Country music (it was a Top 10 hit in the UK), and
showed Parton to be the definitive performer of her own material.
She later proved equally adept at revitalising 80s pop and
evergreen bluegrass standards.
