The Foundations
Often cited, alongside The Equals and Blue Mink, as British
melting-pot pop, The Foundations consisted of three white
Londoners, a Barbadian, a Jamaican, a Dominican and a Ceylonese.
Their first hit, Baby Now That I've Found You,
established the group in 1968. An unpretentious beat 'n'
bubblegum group, they eschewed flower power stereotypes by
sticking to a clap-happy variant on southern soul. Other
hits included Build Me Up Buttercup and In
The Bad Bad Old Days.
Singer Clem Curtis, and his replacement Colin Young, fronted
a sound that swung through TV studios and wouldn't sound out of
place now as cruise ship entertainment.
