The The
The The was essentially the solo project of Londoner Matt Johnson.
Johnson released a solo album, Burning Blue Soul, in the early
'80s which sketched out The The's sound - atmospheric, experimental
songs that relied more on sound than song.
With the first official The The album, 1983's Soul Mining,
Johnson expanded his sound somewhat, concentrating more on song writing
while retaining the hollow, haunting ambience. With 1986's Infected,
he began recording with studio musicians, which allowed him to embellish
his music with several different styles, particularly dance.
On The The's next album, 1989's Mind Bomb former Smiths
guitarist Johnny Marr joined the band, which helped Johnson to present
his music more clearly. 1993's Dusk was the most
straightforward The The album yet.
