Weddings Parties Anything
Formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1985,
Weddings Parties Anything were a gritty folk-rock band with distinct
Pogues leanings and a very strong Australian colloquial
flavour. Fronted by songwriter Michael Thomas, the band released their
first single in 1986 - the independently released Go! Move! Shift!
which was followed early in 87 by Away Away from their
debut album Scorn Of The Women.
Since then there have been six albums;
Roaring Days (1988), The Big Don't Argue (1989),
Difficult Loves (1992), King Tide (1993), Donkey
Serenade (1995) and River'esque (1996). Over that period
the band have been with three different labels, won three awards,
played well over 1000 gigs and travelled approximately a million
kilometres.
Weddings Parties Anything have rarely set
the charts on fire, but have instead developed and maintained a solid
and passionate live following, especially in Australia, but have made
inroads into the UK and Canada where they have toured frequently.
Their major chart moment came in 1992
with Father's Day from the Difficult Loves album, which
won awards for song of the year. What sets WPA apart from most
other bands are Thomas' songs with contemporary issues set in distinct
Australian geographical and historical settings.
Over more than a decade, Weddings Parties
Anything have carved a distinct terrain in Australian folk/rock. |
