Afghanistan War

In 1979 the Soviet Union embarked on a disastrous war in Afghanistan, attempting to uphold the Communist-led government against the Islamic Mujahedeen. The West condemned the invasion and sent military aid to the Mujahedeen.

In 1988 Gorbachev pulled the Soviet troops out.
