Communes
Newsweek magazine declared the year 1969 the "Year of the
Commune". A commune could be characterised as a large group
of people (usually unrelated) living together in an arrangement
where they shared chores, food, clothing, and each other.
The
groups would often live together as a family, pooling their
resources and abilities in order to coexist happily.
For the Hippie of the late 60s, the
commune provided an environment of peace, love and harmony. To the
more conservative in the community, communes represented dangerous
drop-outs who no doubt indulged in illegal drugs, illicit sex and
plots against the Government.
