When Brad Benson walked into the Liberty Coffee Shop, Angie thought he was poor and began sneaking him some pastries. It turned out that he was a pediatrician and a member of one of Philadelphia's richest families. In true Cinderella fashion, Angie and Brad fell in love and got married, despite the objections of Brad's sister, Joyce and stuffy father, Randall, and much to the surprise of Angie's mother, the down-to-earth Theresa.

Angie's father had walked out 19 years earlier (He "went to get the paper" but never returned) and Theresa still kept a place at the family table for him. Theresa had raised Angie and her younger sister Marie by running a newsstand.

The Bensons had an altogether different set of problems, not least of which was the fact that snobbish Joyce was three times divorced and undergoing therapy with a psychiatrist who hated her.

Angie and Brad moved into Brad's mansion, but the surroundings were so ostentatious and grand that they later bought a smaller house, with Brad setting up his practice on the first floor.

Angie then bought the Liberty Coffee Shop to keep herself busy, and later traded it for a beauty shop where Gianni was the pleasure-seeking hairstylist. Other regular characters included Didi (Angie's big-hearted best friend at the coffee shop) and Phipps the butler.
