Adam's Rib
1 9 7 3 (USA)
13 x 25 minute episodes
Based on the Spencer Tracy/Katharine Hepburn movie
classic of the same title, this romantic comedy featured a young
Assistant District Attorney and his wife, a junior partner in a law
firm, whose jobs often put them on opposite sides in the courtroom as
well as at home.
Adam's Rib tried to pay homage to the Women's
Lib movement of the time by building many stories around Amanda's
crusades for women's rights - In one episode, Amanda tries to get into
a classy restaurant, but is refused admission because she's wearing a
trouser suit and the dress code requires ladies to wear skirts or
dresses. Amanda complains to her husband that this policy is
discriminatory and illegal.
The DA has more important things to deal with though,
like prosecuting murderers and rapists. So, what does Amanda do? She
goes out and buys a dress for 'a very large woman', then demands that
her husband put it on. Apparently this will be a blow for women's
rights. Adam puts on the frock. Surprisingly (?) the series never
quite found an audience.
Dena Dietrich ("Mother Nature" of TV commercial fame)
played Amanda's secretary, Gracie, and Kip was her law partner.
