35 x 60 minute episodes
Based loosely on the book of the same
name by real-world US flying ace, Gregory Boyington, this series was
the story of a squadron of misfit flyers in the South Pacific during
World War II.
Squadron 214 was composed of men who had
been on the verge of court martial before Boyington provided them with
reprieves. They were general pests and non-conformists who had been
charged with everything from fighting with officers to stealing
alcohol.
Pappy was the "old man" compared to his
men (he was 35!), and maintained almost no discipline, ignored all
military regulations and did not care at all what his men got up to
when they weren't on missions.
The series was renamed Black Sheep
Squadron in the 1977-1978 season and Captain Dottie Dixon was
added to the cast. Dixon was in charge of the nurses on Vella La Cava,
the island where Pappy and his men were based, and four of her nurses
became regulars in early 1978. They were christened "Pappy's Lambs".
Nurse Nancy was played by Robert Conrads'
real daughter, Nancy Conrad.
